Homecoming is a highly anticipated event for students, faculty, and alumni across universities, where the community comes together to showcase their school spirit. This year’s annual homecoming at Southern embraced the theme “They Not Like Us,” featuring events such as the Fashion Show, Comedy Show, Jagcade After Dark, Homecoming Concert, and the much-anticipated Homecoming Tailgate and football game. While the Tailgate and game are the highlights of homecoming, this year presented several challenges that turned an otherwise joyous occasion into a frustrating experience for many attendees.
One of the most significant issues faced by my friends and me was the lack of cell service throughout the Tailgate. Communication during such a large event is essential, as thousands of people gather on campus, and being unable to connect with peers can feel isolating. At one point, my friends and I became separated due to the sheer number of attendees and were unable to reach each other until we left the event. This lack of connectivity not only caused inconvenience but also posed safety hazards. For instance, during a moment of panic sparked by alleged gunshots, a mass stampede occurred, resulting in injuries as individuals were trampled. While I was fortunate to remain connected with my friends, I couldn’t help but worry about those who were not so lucky.
Additionally, road blockages on campus exacerbated the situation. Homecoming at Southern University attracts visitors from all over, leading to a significant increase in traffic. Blocking off all but one entrance to campus, with only two exit routes available, created a chaotic environment. Vehicles piled up, and pedestrians wandered every which way, complicating the experience of entering and exiting campus. For some attendees, it took over two hours to leave or return. Navigating the campus became nearly impossible, as roadblocks forced detours and delays. Instead of the anticipated excitement of moving freely after tailgating festivities, I found myself trapped in a maze of obstacles, which only added to my growing frustration.
As I reflect on this year’s homecoming, I acknowledge that challenges are an inherent part of any event. Despite the difficulties I encountered, I remain hopeful for future gatherings where connection and enjoyment can thrive. Each homecoming presents an opportunity for growth and understanding, and I look forward to embracing the spirit of Southern’s homecoming once again next year.
