Southern University senior soccer standout Sydney Bellamy has been named SWAC Player of the Week for the second time this season. Originally from Jamaica, a nation passionate about soccer, Bellamy proudly represents her heritage, family, and university through her athletic achievements.
“I know I represent more than just myself; I represent Southern as a whole. When people see me, they see my family and who I am,” Bellamy reflected.
Bellamy’s soccer journey began early, as she started playing at just three years old. “My journey started when I was three, playing peewee soccer. From there, I kept going—joining club teams, high school, and falling more in love with the sport each step of the way,” she shared.
When it came to choosing a college, Southern University stood out. “The coaches and players really influenced my decision. Southern just felt right, and that’s how I ended up here,” Bellamy explained.
Balancing academics and athletics can be challenging, but Bellamy credits her success to disciplined time management. “It’s a lot of work, but consistency and discipline are key. My planner keeps me on track,” she advised.
Bellamy, who serves as co-captain of the Lady Jaguar soccer team, believes in leading by example. “For me, leadership is about actions, not just words. I try to set a good example, follow the rules, and make sure no one falls through the cracks. Sometimes, you have to give someone that extra 20 percent when they need it,” she explained.
Bellamy’s skill, leadership, and determination make her a formidable force in collegiate women’s soccer. With her sights set high, she continues to inspire her teammates and make her university proud.
