In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, pink-adorned attendants spilled into seats of the Smith-Brown Memorial Mocha Room for the fourth senate meeting of the year. On Tuesday, October 8 senators updated and informed students about what’s new on Southern University’s campus preceding the much-anticipated Homecoming week.
To begin, the College of Agricultural, Human, and Environmental Sciences senator excitedly introduced the new Office of Student Support kiosk, which promises to offer resources such as academic advising, financial assistance, mental health support, tutoring services, recommendation letters, and more. The College of Business followed in recognition of a vigorous campaign resulting in the new Mr. College of Business, senior, DeAndre Waites and Miss College of Business, junior, Trinity Lane for the 2024-2025 school year. The college went on to acknowledge the success of students Nalene Sumo, Megan Abraham, and the rest of their team who secured first place at the sixth Annual Moguls in the Making Pitch Competition, held in Detroit, Michigan. The team brought home a total of $100,000 and secured internship offers for each team member.
The College of Government and Social Science announced the commencement of the semi-annual Iris Center Drive hosted by the International Honors Society. They intend to accept supplies including toothpaste, soap, and detergent in support of domestic violence survivors. Donations will be gracisouly accepted until October 31 in the drop-off box located in Blanks Hall, along with QR codes available for more information. Senator Rylon B. Rowe encourages students to fill these out “so that we can ensure your voices are heard and your problems are addressed.”
The order of events then shifted to the approval of freshman cabinet leadership positions for the 2024-2025 school year. First was Kevin Wilkinson Jr., sworn in unanimously as Freshman Chief of Staff. Next in sequence was Freshman Business Manager, Kadra Bates, who when asked how she will ensure the success of her cabinet, responded, “As the business manager, I plan to promote effective communication, leadership and overall collaboration through our cabinet as a team.”
The next official appointed was Ahmiracle Wilson as Freshman Finance Manager, Ahmiracle Wilson. When questioned how she intends to maintain a proper budget for the class, she answered, “One way I will make sure the freshman class budget is properly managed is by effective thinking and thoroughly thinking about the decisions we make with our budgeting.” Additions to the 2024-2025 freshman cabinet concluded with freshman, Nazylah Gipson, being sworn in as the Public Relations director for the freshman cabinet.
