Southern University and A&M College has traditionally focused on Agriculture, Engineering, Nursing, and Business Management. Now, the Mass Communications Department is stepping into the limelight, aiming to become a top choice for students shaping their futures on the bluff.
Mass Communications, a department houseda in William H. Stewart Hall, is making significant strides with new facilities. In response to student feedback, the administration is adding a TV recording studio, a radio and podcast room, and two new study spaces. These updates are designed to provide students with hands-on experiences crucial for their future careers.
Devin Hadrick, a 2019 graduate, shared his excitement, “Academically, these changes are going to do great things for the department. I know how much fun I had with the old equipment when I was at Southern, and I know new students’ eyes will light up at the chance to learn new skills with the updated gear.”
The TV studio, established in 1975, will see its most significant upgrade yet. Hadrick added, “This upgrade won’t just make Mass Communications a competitive major for incoming students, but also set it apart across the state and the nation.”
The new facilities will enhance the learning environment significantly. The TV studio will feature high-definition cameras and advanced editing software, enabling students to produce professional-quality content. The radio and podcast room will provide a space for exploring audio production and broadcasting, skills both increasingly valuable in today’s media landscape. Additional study spaces will offer areas dedicated to project collaboration and skill development.
These improvements reflect the department’s commitment to industry standards and preparing students for successful careers. The upgraded facilities will give students practical experience in a professional setting, providing them a competitive edge in the job market.
The department’s growth aligns with broader trends in media and communications. As technology and media consumption evolve, having access to cutting-edge equipment will be crucial for students. By investing in these upgrades, Southern University ensures its students are well-equipped to meet modern media demands.
Faculty members are also enthusiastic about the changes. Dr. Yolanda Campbell, Interim Chair of the Department of Mass Communication, said, “I am extremely excited about the new state-of-the-art television studio, open-view newsroom, editing suites, and more. Our department will benefit from sharing this space with the newly approved Digital Media Arts program, which will feature five concentrations, including Screen Arts and Digital Sports Production. Even though we will be two different majors, we will have a close kinship with the Digital Media Arts program, and our students will be the greatest beneficiaries. I’m sure they can’t wait!”
Current students are eagerly anticipating the new resources. Senior Mass Communications major Jaishel Capdeville expressed her excitement: “As a senior, I’m very excited about all of the changes coming to Stewart Hall. Our new study room looks amazing! Every time I walk past it, someone is enjoying their time inside. I feel like these changes are not only long overdue but very much needed. I’m so happy that future students will enjoy all of the beautiful renovations and get even more opportunities than I had.”
As Southern University’s Mass Communications Department continues to grow, it is set to become a leading choice for students pursuing careers in media and communications. With new facilities and enhanced resources, the department is well on its way to achieving this goal, making a significant impact on its students and the field of mass communications. Updates are expected for completion by the Fall 2025 semester.
