Every mentor I’ve ever had has drilled into me the importance of balance — you know, that classic “work hard, play harder” mentality. But let’s be real: who else finds themselves caught between turning up at the hottest campus events and keeping that GPA on point? I know I’m not the only one feeling that struggle! Fortunately, I’ve had a little practice balancing a heavy workload with all the extra fun stuff, and I’m here to share the wealth. No gatekeeping here — check out these tips to keep your GPA high and still enjoy every minute of your HBCU experience!
1. GO TO CLASS.
Sounds obvious, but it’s true. You’re paying for it, so why waste your money? Plus, you can’t graduate if you don’t show up. Don’t get purged or risk failing for skipping out — finish what you started by starting in the first place!
2. Keep a Digital Calendar Handy.
I swear by Google Calendar. Plug in your class schedule and organization meetings so you don’t overbook yourself. Make sure to carve out time during the day to knock out assignments ahead of time. Trust me, future you will thank you.
3. Choose Your Involvements Wisely.
Don’t join every organization just because you want to be seen. HBCUs are like one big block party — you’re going to meet people regardless. Be selective. Join clubs that fuel your passions or help you advance academically. Two or three organizations are plenty; don’t burn yourself out trying to be everywhere at once.
4. There’s No Shame in Getting a Tutor.
We’re not all Einsteins! If you’re struggling, reach out for help. The university has tutoring centers for every subject. Keep those A’s — it’s easier to maintain a high GPA than to bring up a low one.
5. Schedule Time for Fun!
We all need breaks, so make sure to take yours. Campus events are always a vibe and a great way to connect with new friends. Don’t graduate saying, “I wish I went to Homecoming” or “I should’ve gone to that game.” No regrets, just memories!
6. Find an Accountability Partner.
We all have that one friend who keeps us in check. Hold onto that friend for dear life! If you don’t have one, find someone who will push you to be your best, and do the same for them.
7. Rest is Essential — Avoid Burnout!
Juggling everything can be overwhelming, so don’t forget to recharge. Even the Energizer Bunny runs out of juice eventually. Know your limits, and don’t be afraid to take time for yourself.
8. Remember: The Sky’s the Limit!
You can do anything you set your mind to. Block out the haters, and keep climbing. You got this — I believe in you! Now go out there and be great, Jags!
