All threelocations of the Southern University System, including the New Orleans andShreveport locations will be seeing new dormitories built on their campuses.
The two newdorms on the Baton Rouge campus will cost approximately $13 million and areprojected to begin construction within the next few months.
The layout ofthe dorms will be exactly like Camille E. Shade Hall and Samuella V. TottyHall, the most recently built female dorms.
The Shreveportand New Orleans locations, respectively, will have the same design for theirdorms but they will be a smaller version with fewer rooms and also projected tobe started in the near future.
According toEndas W. Vincent, the system director of facilities planning the dorms at theSUBR location will probably be split up and have one house the males and theother house the females.
“It’s been time;it’s long over due. It’s great that they’re building new dorms and it’s fairthat they’re getting new dorms for the guys because their dorms are not up topar,” said Akilah Ali, a junior majoring in civil engineering from Crowley.
The first dormthat will be built will be a state-funded building. The second upcoming dormwill be paid for by the system foundation, third party finance.
“It’s long overdue. They’re talking about the alumni house — they need to worry about thestudents here now,” said Jamal Simmons, a senior majoring in masscommunications from New Orleans.
The new dormswill be built in the back of campus directly behind Alice Boley Hall. The dormswill bring more parking for the resident students in the back of the campus.
“I think it’s agood idea; the time has come. It’s so much area in the back of campus, it’stime for some new dormitories,” said Synericka Hardy, a junior majoring in masscommunication from Houston.
