When living a fast paced and on the go lifestyle, the eating habits of college students mimic those traits.
“Fast food restaurants are convenient and you know that you will gain satisfaction with it because it is the same all the time,” said Anika Diggs, a senior secondary education major from New Orleans.
“You get what you expect, which is that acquired taste.”
Eating in the cafeteria is always an option for students, but it is not always accessible to them at their convenience.
“The cafeteria closes too early and many people have classes during the hours it is open,” said Irma Pryor, a sophomore nursing major from Ferriday. “They should look into extending their hours.”
The cafeteria is open for breakfast 7-9 a.m., lunch 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and dinner in from 4-7 p.m. in Mayberry Hall and 4-6 p.m. in Dunn Hall.
The Smith-Brown Memorial Union Jaguar Express offers meals that are on the same level with many fast food restaurants but at a greater convenience to students.
“You can’t change the variety or service you get in the cafeteria, because you already paid for it,” said LaTasha Cobb a sophomore criminal justice major from Dallas.
“Fast food restaurants and the food in the union are better than what we have in the cafeteria.”
Each semester, students with university meal plans have the option to eat in the dining halls and are provided with $100 to use in the union.
However many students wished that the university would give students the option to use more money in the union rather than eating in the dining halls.
“I would rather have $700 go to the union and $100 go to the cafeteria,” Cobb said.
Most fast food options are not nutritious. The cafeteria is not always health conscious, but offers baked potatoes and salads daily.
“I like that school because you can fix it how you want,” said Shonterence Adams, a sophomore psychology major from New Orleans.
Angel Martin, a junior political science major from New Orleans, said eating fast food is an American habit that is more than just a trend.
“It fits our lifestyle as students because it is convenient, but sometimes it is not the best solution health wise.”
