Everybody always claims “I want to know the truth”, but how much truth can you really handle.
The truth by my definition can’t be defined as an absolute black or white, but rather it is seen as an abstract grey.
I have noticed that when we talk in terms of truth more other then not we mean “some degree of truth.”
Who among us can really handle absolute truth?
Not many of us. When it come down to it you would rather hear that you have a C at midterm and you need to work hard; than hearing that you have 45% in the class and the only way to get a passing grade is to make the curve as steep as a mountain slope.
See, there are only certain degrees of truth that we are prepared to except.
So what lies or “degree of truth” have we set for ourselves to lives our life comfortably?
We have or rather I have created a degree of truth that allows me to believe that I will always be in the company of my brothers and sisters for the rest of my life.
However, this degree of truth will most likely end after graduation.
I realize that after I graduate my world will fill with color and the many cultures that I have been removed from since my tenure here at Southern.
This however is just one of my degrees of truth that I choose to believe. We have many that are tested on a daily basis. We tell ourselves that our parents are always going to be there for us. Then we loose a grandmother to breast cancer, or grandfather to old age and our degree of truth is then tested.
We tell ourselves that the person that we are with is the person that we want to spend the rest of our life with. Then you see that person at a late show hugged on someone else.
They get in the car after a sweet kiss and ride away.
Again, the degree of truth that you have to believe has been tested.
So what is a safe degree of truth to believe in while still living comfortably?
Again, this is not a thing that can be seen as an absolute; no black or white, but rather that same abstract gray in which I define truth.
We have all heard it before.
To each his own but, you must recognize that your degree of truth may not be what you want to believe.
Your degree of truth is set to what you allow yourself to believe.
Denial isn’t just a river in Egypt.
The truth is- denial is the lifeline of optimism and this is what we need to maintain our sanity.
So the next time you tell someone to tell you the truth- think. Do I really need the truth?
Have I really equipped myself to hear the truth or do I really only need to hear a degree of truth that satisfies my personal belief.
This is not to tell you what to think, but rather what to think about!
