Bright colors and intricate patterns are some of the 2004 spring fashions showcased by Southern University students.
As with anything, history repeats itself and currently the retro, casual and rock styles are in.
“I like the retro style and it was bound to come back, with a different twist on hip-hop,”,said Tiphany Easterling, a sophomore business and marketing major from Vallejo, Calif.
Retro style clothing is when a trend of a past style becomes current with a new generation. The current style in is from the late 70’s to the early and mid 80’s. Clothing and accessories such as fishnet stockings, off the shoulder shirts, and bright colored jackets are in for females. While trucker hats, large belt buckles, striped button down shirts and matching scullys are in for males.
The “rock” look, which includes the daring but fashionable low-rise jeans and recycled hodgepodge shirts which are tight fitting shirts that look like they’ve been around the block a few times, according to Jorbins website. An outrageously colored jacket is what some people might wear to complete the ensemble.
” I like the colors and the retro look. Usually you see all solid colors but retro style is tempting to the eye”, said LaShelia Williams, a senior sociology major from Alexandria.
The retro colors include lime green, hot pink and neon yellow.
Men are beginning to portray a business/casual image rather than the urban/ hip-hop style. The casual look is usually a nice pair of designer jeans or slacks with a button down solid or stripped shirt.
“I like to dress in more of a professional style because along with being a dancing doll, I still have to keep up the nice image,” Synae Brown, a junior computer science major from Atlanta said.
Laverne and Shirley signature shirts also made a comeback this season, with other initial bags, coin purses and jewelry.
“I think what you wear is a self-expression. People should not wear clothing to be like other people,” Easterling said.
