Sports professionals from across the country will gather in Atlanta on February 19-21 to assist minority students and professionals who are interested in a career in sports.
Topics discussed at the Sports Enfocus Fourth Annual Minority Trailblazers in Sports Conference will include collegiate sports opportunities, sports reporting, women in the sports industry and public/community relations in the sports industry.
“This conference is to help minorities who are interested in getting their foot in the door of the sports industry,” said Paula L. Jackson, conference coordinator. “I’ve always been interested in the industry and coming out of college, no one could give me the information that I wanted.”
According to Jackson, a graduate of Southern University, if a person was not a member of a football team or an agent, information was limited to those ‘on the outside looking in.’”
Panelists scheduled to attend include representatives from Nike, Inc. and the Atlanta Falcons. Other panelists scheduled to attend include Houston Texans Vice President of Communications Tony Wylie; William Bryant, assistant director of media relations for the Tennessee Titans and Duane Lewis, director of football media for the St. Louis Rams.
Wylie is a graduate of Texas Southern University and Bryant is an alum of Howard University. Lewis is also an alumnus of Southern.
The event will take place at the Sheraton Buckhead Hotel Atlanta.
Those planning to attend are encouraged to call the hotel at (404) 261-9250 for discounted rates.
The registration fee is $150 for professionals and $75 for students, yet students from Southern University will be charged only $50.
