In an effort to help alleviate academic problems new students may experience, a new tutorial program is available for freshmen at Southern University.
“The purpose of this program is to increase the retention rate so that more students will stay at Southern and be able to get help with course work,” said Jonathan Goins, graduate worker at the Martin Luther King Catholic Student Center.
Goins, who initiated the program, also plans and oversees all tutorial activities at the Catholic center.
Tutoring will take place in the freshmen levels of math, science, English and history every Thursday 4-7p.m. in Martin Luther King Jr. Catholic Student center. Tutors for this service are volunteers from the Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.
Freshman class president Reuben Griffin feels thrilled that this opportunity is being offered to freshmen.
” I feel that this will help the freshmen to adjust to the much more strenuous academic load that we will have to bear,” Griffin said.
There is no limit on the amount of people that may come and seek assistance.
“We are going to help everyone we can,” Goins said.
