Off-campus living is now closerthan ever. On August 15, “The Palisades of Jaguar City” moved in its firstbatch of tenants.
The apartment community has thecapacity to house 550 people, but only 250 residents are calling the Palisadeshome.
It was planned to open completelyin August, but construction for this $25 million dollar housing project isstill underway.
“We had a lot of complications,but as a whole it went pretty well,” said Jay MccLurkin assistant generalmanager for the Palisades.
Located on Scenic Highway at theentrance of Southern University, the complex includes one, two and four bedroomapartments and all tenants have access to the fitness center, computer lab,pool and game room. The rent forthe palisades includes all utilities and is furnished.
The apartments that are currentlybeing leased and are completed to living standards, but some amenities arestill being placed. Tenants aremissing microwaves, tables and other things that are necessary, but notessential MccLurkin said.
“When people first got here thingswere still missing,” he said, “but the residents were very patient with theprocess.”
It still needs work, but it isstill is a good living environment, said Wesley Netter a junior, businesseconomics major.
”It is still a work in progress, one it is completed it willbe exceptional,” Netter said. “It gives you the closeness of staying on campus,but the freedom of staying off campus.”
Apartment managers are stillleasing two and four bedroom apartments. The next set of one bedroom apartmentswill open within the next two weeks, MccLurkin said.
No official date is set for thegrand opening ceremony, but it will be in late September MccLurkin said.
“We are excited about the studentsthat are here and to have an apartment community next to Southern University.”
