Dr. Joseph T. Kennedy, a professor in Southern University’s Mass Communication department, is this week’s DIGEST Faculty Member of the Week.
After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Math and Master of Arts in Studio Art at Georgia State University, he received his doctorate degree Art Criticism at the University if Georgia. Kennedy began his teaching career at Southern in 1981 and has committed himself to numerous boards and organizations.
An accomplished artist, he has exhibited his work in galleries including the New Orleans Contemporary Art Center. He is also preparing for a summer in France at the Pupal Ruins of Avignone.
“Dr. Kennedy keeps it real,” said Anderson Dye, a graduate student from Ferriday. “He teaches us the overall values of college and education. He is different from other teachers because he gives you one-on-one experience. You can always come back and ask questions even after you are finished in his class. He is open and welcomes all students no matter what their major is.”
Kennedy declares that it is important for students to learn all they can while in school.
“The advice I want to give students is to use these college years wisely to enhance your ability to learn,” he said. “Technology is evolving and you must become aware of a changing world. Grow and learn how to learn, that’s what education is about. Learn research skills, study skills and technology skills and use them to succeed.”
