The category four (131-155 miles per hour winds) Hurricane Ivan hit the gulf coast of Mississippi, Alabama and threatened parts of south Louisiana with heavy winds Wednesday night (Sept. 16).
Ivan caused the Southern University women’s soccer team to cancel their weekend games. Rohan Naraine, the Lady Jaguars head coach, said it was for the safety of the team.
“Everything was cancelled this weekend,” Naraine said. “We are looking forward to rescheduling. The most important thing is the kids and their families. I don’t care about the games; they could be rescheduled.”
The games were planned for Friday against Alcorn State University (at Clark Park in Baker) and Sunday at Mississippi Valley State in Itta Bena, Miss.
Schools were closed throughout southeast Louisiana. Classes were cancelled at Southern Wednesday and Thursday, but resumed on Friday.
A good thing that came from Ivan, according to Naraine, was that his team is now well rested from the school closure.
“We we’re all banged up. They had a little break to catch up on school work and hopefully we will be ready.”
The Lady Jaguars (0-6-1) will play in the double header against Alcorn State University in Brookhaven, Miss., on Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
