Buying food from the union is a destination dining experience: students go there, because they know what they are going to get. However, different facilities in the union are often closed.
“I feel they should all close at the same time,” said Dsherick Boone, a junior majoring in criminal justice from Dallas. “It would give students with late classes more options.”
The union offers Chicken Shack, Bene Pizzeria, Edy’s, Montague’s Deli, Tortilla Fresca and Home Zone, a “Louisiana style” eating establishment.
Their hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 10 a.m. —4 p.m. on Fridays. Edy’s does not open until 11a.m.
Ferin Nelson, a freshmen majoring in psychology from Wichita Falls, TX is not happy with the fact that Edy’s is not always open.
“I think it’s ridiculous because you can get food but you can’t get any desert since Edy’s is close.”
Dolores Brown, assistant food service director, said that they try not to have Edy’s closed.
“Edy’s was not originally opened when the year began. Plus we changed a lot of things with our new concept.”
According to Brown Montague’s Deli and Bene Pizzeria are the most popular food establishments; the line in Chicken Shack is long because of the time it takes to cook it.
“I don’t care about the hours because I like the pizza place and it’s always open,” said Jakia Dixon, a sophomore majoring in rehabilitation services from Jefferson.
Brown explains that there is a reason why some establishments close at different times.
“Home Zone closes at three because that’s when the students usually stop coming, because the food is closely related to Mayberry and Dunn,” Brown said.
“So students go there at that time instead of eating it in the union. Home Zone is more or less convenient for when students can’t get to Dunn or Mayberry. We want to give the students as many choices as possible.”
According to Brown, the food establishments close when the students stop coming.
