The College Democrats Southern University chapterbegan three years ago on the Baton Rouge campus, working to promote politicalawareness for all students on the SU campus.
“I decided to become a Democrat when I became awarethat the basic things that the party stood for were the basic principles that Iagreed with,” said Lauren Malbroux, The College Democrats president.
Malbroux recognizes the difference between theDemocratic Party and other parties.
“The Democratic party is the party for the people, meaning it caters toward every citizen regardless of economic status, race, disability, sexual orientation and religion,” Malbroux said.
Malbroux joined the organization her freshmen year(2003) under the direction of Sheena Foster, who was the president at the time.
“We did the national campaign invasion with KathleenBlanco,” she said. “I worked withUnity ’04 with her and we registered people to vote. She mentored me in workingin politics in general.”
Malbroux encourages students who are Democrats onSouthern’s campus to join The College Democrats.
“Its time for student’s to act on their beliefs andunite as a student body to change things in our community,” Malbroux said.
The College Democrats focus is not only on thestudents who are Democrats.
“We (The College Democrats) want to encourage thewhole student body to become politically active. The importance of becomingpolitically active is to better our community,” Malbroux said.
“I think the organization is slowly but surelygrowing,” said Tamara Washington, The College Democrats vice president. “Ithink the more events that we have students will see the image that we aretrying to put out and the organization will continue to grow.”
Malbroux embraces organizations like the College Republicans.
“I am actually happy to know that a counterpartexists so we can educate the students on what both parties stand for,” Malbrouxsaid.
