We have all had our issues withthe presidential administration over the past four years. With the conclusionof the last presidential debates Wednesday night, the president made one thingpainfully obvious. President Bush is not the best choice for the next fouryears.
During the course of the seconddebate, he has admitted to making mistakes of massive proportion. Although whenhe was asked the question, What are three specific decisions that you madeduring your term as president that turned out to be mistakes, Bush ducked thequestion and ramble on the number of and difficulty of presidential decisionshe is responsible for.
What Bush failed to mention whendiscussing the mistakes of his presidency was the fact that war in Iraq was tobe used as a line resort. It was used far short of a last resort.
After the country entered apreemptive war with “no intention of winning the peace,” as so accuratelycoined by presidential hopeful Senator John Kerry-D, Bush stated that the warin Iraq would be one of a “great coalition.” The coalition that we have seenhas been one of the US, Australia, Poland, and Great Britain. Surly if thiscoalition was of the great magnitude that the president proclaimed, the deathtoll for soldiers in combat should not have been so high.
In a more recent debate, thepresidential candidates debated issues of a more domestic nature. The topicsduring this debate covered things like the state of social security, taxes, national healthcare and same sex marriages.
The most heated portion of thedebate were the topics of healthcare and social security. The first question ofthe debate from CBS News anchor Bob Schieffer to Kerry was about homelandsecurity. “Will our children and grandchildren live in a world that was as safeas ours?” Schieffer asked.
“Will we ever be safe and secureagain? Yes, we absolutely must be,” Kerry said. “That’s the goal.” He thenaccused Bush of not doing enough as president to protect the nation fromterrorism. In return, President Bush agreed the United States can be a safenation. “Yes, we can be safe and secure, if we stay on the offense against theterrorists and if we spread freedom and liberty around the world,” Bush said.
