In its second year, the Gala on theBluff will attempt to prove itself to be a successful fundraiser for theAdvisory Council of the College of Business of Southern University.
This year the gala will be heldduring Homecoming Week on Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. at the Sheraton Baton RougeConvention Center Hotel.
This event will help generatescholarships for students who participate in the College of Business and toassist in the maintenance of the college’s accreditation with the Associationto Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB).
The Gala on the Bluff targets the”baby boomers,” allowing those Southern alumni an opportunity to enjoythemselves during the Homecoming celebration outside of the activities forcurrent students.
“I like the atmosphere, the food,the conversation and you meet people who you haven’t seen in a while. It’s likethe Essence Festival, where you are able to float and listen to both types ofentertainment,” said Marilyn Doherty, executive secretary for the College ofBusiness.
The event will have four differentacts featuring R&B and jazz music performing simultaneously on differentstages under one roof. Among the artists performing will be the group Con FunkShun featuring Michael Cooper and Felton Pilate, a premier funk and soulensemble of the ’70s and ’80s. On the main stage, Kenny Neal, a nationalcontemporary blues artist who is a native of Baton Rouge; Joe Carmouche, asmooth jazz and R&B guitarist; and Michael Ward, a contemporary jazzviolinist who is a Southern alum.
This event, inaugurated in 2003,also attracts current students.
“I’m excited and look forward toit,” said LaToya Buntun, a junior management major from Sacramento. “I’mconsidering going so I can dress up, because it’s a classy event where you canenjoy the essence of beauty, good music, as well as the business aspects.”
Tickets are $75, a decrease fromlast year.
“The price was set for the smallermarket to make sure the individuals who attended the gala experience a firstclass event of a $100 at a discount,” said Donald A. Andrews, Dean of theCollege of Business
