Cell phones are a popular item forcollege students in modern society.
About half of all college studentsin the United States have their own cell phones shows research from the Collegeof Business at Arizona State and Cellular One.
It is becoming more of a trend tohear loud ring tones such as R&B singer Ciera’s “Goodies” and Aristarecording artist Usher’s “Bad Girl” coming from 3G for free or 3G upload in theclassrooms.
Cell phones have been the cause ofmany embarrassing situations in the classrooms due to ringers not being turnedoff before class. They are a distracting item when it comes down to class and agood learning environment.
“It is very irresponsible for a cellphone to go off in class and it distracts me and makes me mad,” said AntonioGardner, a senior from Memphis, Tennessee.
The cell phones of the instructorscan also make interruptions in class.
“Cell phones are a disturbance ifthey are on in class period. It is even worse if the instructors cell phonegoes off in class,” said Marilyn Rutland, an instructor in the MassCommunications Department.
Some instructors have methods behindgetting the students to follow the rules.
“I announce to the students to turnoff their cell phones. Then I take mine out and turn it off and since then Ihave not had any problems,” said Dr. Horace Smith a Mathematics Instructor.
The usage of cell phones in classcan give students the ability to cheat by using text messaging which is aconcern for instructors.
“If I found someone using textmessaging, I would treat it like cheating. I think that if you give a test suchas a essay or short answer that text messaging cannot help with then textmessaging would not be a problem,” said Dr. Darryl Scriven, an instructor inPhilosophy and Logic.
So to all students and instructors, remember to either turn off your cell phones or put them on vibrate so it wontbe such a disturbance to the class.
