Southern University students notonly work hard to get the grade but also for the bucks.
“It is hard to work and go to schoolat the same time, because you don’t have time for yourself and you don’t havetime to study,” said Mariam Animashaun, a senior education major from BatonRouge.
Chief of Police Dale Flowers notonly protects and serves at SU but is also a student here. He came to SouthernUniversity when he graduated from high school in 1982.
“My dream was to own my own publicrelations and advertising firm,” Flowers said. He is currently majoring in masscommunication and will be graduating this December.
“I love writing,” he said.
Flowers said once he receives hisdegree, he will continue in law enforcement. He also plans to eventually attendNew Orleans Baptist Theology Institute to work on a master’s degree. Flowershas been the Chief of Police since July 2001.
Dionne Allen, a junior majoring inpsychology from LaPlace has been working at Esplanade Mall in Kenner since herfreshman year.
“I only work weekends during schooltime and on holidays I’m a full time employee,” Allen said.
Being that Allen leaves Southern’scampus every weekend to work, she feels that at times she does miss out.
“I miss out on developingfriendships with people on campus,” Allen said.
Though Allen only works on theweekends, she still has to balance her study time.
“It doesn’t affect me, because Ionly work weekends but it can because if I don’t study on the weekends afterwork, that can affect me,” she said.
Deshun Robertson, a seniorrecreational therapy major from Baton Rouge, has similar sentiments.
He has been an employee at ArgosyCasino for a year. The need for money to pay bills and extra income promptedhim to seek employment. With his job meeting his financial needs, his studytime is very rare.
“I don’t spend the proper time on myschool work, because I’m tired when I get off of work,” he said. “I study alittle bit at work and when I get home I study at like three in the morning. Iknow I have bills I have to pay and I know I also have a goal to achieve atschool. So I clear my mind to do both.”
