Despite being the 2003 Southwestern Athletic Conference champions and their predicted order of finish, only one player from the Southern University Lady Jaguars softball team made the 2004 All-SWAC Preseason Softball Team.
Lady Jags’ sophomore pitcher Jayme Roberts was the only Southern to make the team.
Last season, Roberts pitched a 6-4 win-loss record and her 2.05 ERA was the lowest in the conference.
“The team is somewhat upset that only one person was chosen, despite the fact that the team was picked to win the tournament,” said Lady Jags’ head coach Nancy Marshall. “We are happy, but we have to maintain our composure because they (the team) are reminded of the rivalry that Southern has with the teams throughout the SWAC.”
Prairie View A&M’s University pitcher Jamie Cain was selected as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year while Mississippi Valley State’s Queydreka Shumpert was chosen as Preseason Player of the Year.
The 2004 SWAC Preseason Softball Team and predicted order of finish were selected in voting by the conference’s sports information directors and softball coaches.
