It was more like a conversation and not a speech while speaking to her own people according to Jessica Care Moore, the motivational speaker for February.
Moore spoke to a large audience of Southernites Wednesday morning in the Royal Cotillion Ballroom.
“It’s so nice to see Black students during Black History Month,” Moore said. “I’m used to having White schools book me during this month so they can do their part in celebrating Black History. I wish that more Historically Black Colleges and Universities would book me.”
The audience returned the love by being attentive while she shared a few of her poems. In her usual fashion of speaking to the hip-hop culture, Moore touched topics such as America classifying Black students as the minority and President Bush using the word “thug.”
“The word ‘minority’ is the most damaging curse word for any black student,” Moore said.
In a televised speech, Bush repeatedly described Osama bin Laden and Suddam Hussein as “thugs.”
“I got tired of Bush talking about thugs, a real thug looks like Bush to me,” she said.
Moore also spoke of financial independence. She invested her money into her own publishing company. The poet whose career was propelled by the Apollo stage is the owner of Moore Black Press Publishing House.
“I’m not rich nor am I a billionaire yet, but I’ll always feel rich when I’m writing my own checks,” she said.
Moore closed the program by speaking of self-love.
“I don’t know anyone whose skin is brown or black who would just hate.”
