The Southern University Jaguars baseball team will take another swing at another stellar season when they commence their 2004 season Saturday in New Orleans against the University of New Orleans Privateers at 1 p.m. They will swap home plates with the Privateers on Sunday and play at Lee-Hines Field, with the first pitch being thrown at 1 p.m.
Although, the Jags will be without All-American second baseman Rickie Weeks and major league draftees third baseman Antoin Gray and first baseman Kevin Vital, they still will have a few heavy hitters to compliment their fielding and pitching.
“It’s hard to replace a player like Rickie,” said Jags’ head coach Roger Cador. “A player like him doesn’t come along every season. That’s a once in a lifetime player. But we will be fine.”
Junior outfielder Alfred Ard is returning, along with sophomore pitcher Emary Frederick and junior catcher/designated hitter Brandon Mason to try and keep Cador’s squad above the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
The Jags finished the 2003 season 47-7 and dominated the conference in practically every statistic before losing to Southern Miss. in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Tourney.
