When you feel sick, a trip to an emergency room or your hometown physician is no longer necessary, you can receive the same benefits at Southern University.
The Southern University System offers all registered students with access to a sickness and injury plan through Monumental Life Insurance Company.
The cost of the insurance plan is included in student fees. The fee for the policy is $15 and there is also a $40 health fee that goes directly to services provided by the Baranco-Hill Student Health Center. Students will have access to the services provided by the health center and with a referral, receive services from other health care providers.
“This is a supplemental plan, for students using the student health center,” said Carol Burls, SU’s insurance coordinator.
A student can use the insurance at an outside facility without a referral only in the event of a medical emergency, if the student health center is closed during a break or if they live 50 miles away from the university.
“When a student uses an outside physician, they must submit the referral and the claim to the insurance company,” Burls said. “If it is something the insurance company covers, they will make the payments according to the benefits.”
For an additional fee, students can also add dependents to their coverage on a per semester or yearly basis. The maximum coverage for an office visit is $300. If services exceed this amount, the student would have to pay the balance.
” I try to explain to students, there is no guarantee that everything will be paid, because it they are only covered up to a certain amount,” Burls said. For more information call Carol Burls at 771-4770.
