The election is now over. We have successfullyelected the SGA officials that we feel can lead our university for the nextacademic year.
Every day it seemed like someone was asking me whodid I believe should be the SGA president. Unlike this time last year, I didn’twish to get involved in the SGA elections. I didn’t want to be responsible forswaying anybody’s vote with my opinion of each of the candidates.
There are a few things that I feel that the studentbody should take into consideration. We should be thinking about what it is that we want out of the SGAcabinet and staff.
We should be thinking about the things we needimproved as well as the new ideas that we should have in place.
I am sure that I was not alone in thinking this butboth SGA presidential candidates had a certain quality about them that made mebelieve that they both could get the job done.
Although those qualities were different in each ofthe candidates I had a feeling that there was something great that would comeout of this election.
After sitting down and talking with Monroe and HughesMonday evening one thing was apparent… I was right.
Not only were these two young men capable to run asuccessful administration; but also these young men had the potential to be thebest administration that Southern University has ever seen.
During our conversation I stated to them that theywere the best combination of leaders that I have ever witnessed since my tenurehere at Southern, I also stated that they have the opportunity to take ouruniversity to levels that we have never seen before.
However, the task would not be an easy one if theywere not willing to work together.
It is my opinion that African Americans are commonlythe first to become part of the “crab in a barrel” scenario- in which if one isabout to come up the others feel they need to pull them down instead of helpingthem succeed.
Monroe has the personality that is inviting to all. This quality should bring new faces and ideas to the SGA. New ideas, conceptsand views that will include more student issues to better diversify thedecisions that must be made.
On the other hand Hughes is more result oriented. This quality weighs heavily getting things done. After all that is the bottomline and that is why he got my vote.
This is not to say that one candidate was better thanthe other, but we have to recognize the bigger picture- they complement eachother too well not to work hand a hand.
With that mentioned I made a suggestion to the two.
That Author Monroe needs to make Jason Hughes hissecond in command. Both partiesagreed so it is safe to say that this is going to happen maximizing thepotential of the administration. These gentlemen complement each other so well that they can’t go wrongif they work together.
So whether you voted for Jason Hughes or AuthorMonroe you have my word that if they work hand and hand than this will be apolitical machine like none we have ever witnessed.
Monroe and Hughes will invite in the man-power thatpushes the SGA and get the results that we need to see.
The students need to return to SGA. With Monroe andHughes backed by the students Southern can’t lose. Just because you vote doesn’t mean that your part is done. After all your vote only puts the person in office. It is the students thatmake sure that the elected person gets the job done.
So get involved. Remember if you are not part of thesolution than you are a contributor to the problem.
This is not to tell you what to think, but ratherwhat to think about.
