There is onlyone goal and one passion for Student Government Association presidentialcandidate Jason M. Hughes and that is to effectively serve the student body.Hughes is a junior political science and finance major from New Orleans.
Hughes hasalways enjoyed helping people and he formed a love for performing communityservice while in high school.
“In New Orleanspolitics was so corrupt,” Hughes said. ”I wanted to get involved and not be considered a politician, but apublic server because I wanted change the image of New Orleans and create apositive image of New Orleans.”
Beyond SouthernUniversity Hughes plans to continue to work with Louisiana and its Legislature.
“In mysophomore year in high school, I set a goal for myself that by the year 2016 Iwill be elected Congress. That isstill a goal that I am working on and I feel that I will achieve,” Hughes said.
While at SU,Hughes has also made a positive mark and has great expectations for the studentbody. He served as SGA treasurer for the first time, there was the largestbudget turnover for the spring semester. Hughes believes that to be a good SGApresident you must be an advocate for Southern.
“It is aninstitute of higher learning and there are so, many great resources andopportunities it has to offer,” Hughes said. “The presidentneeds to help to promote the positive images that exist on this campus and helpthe community outside of Baton Rouge and outside of Southern to give the trueimage of our university.”
Hughes plans toorganize a stronger public relations campaign within his cabinet,administration and alumni. Doing this he will also use the contacts he hasestablished within the Louisiana Legislature to gain positive attention forSouthern University.
Jason Hughesplatform includes: working towarda better relationship with Aramark, elimination of required meal plans forupperclassmen living on campus, greater cooperation with campus bookstore,continued improvements with the Office of Financial Aid and further technologyupgrades.
He said thiswill be accomplished by making the students more informed about what is takingplace within the SGA.
“I plan to holdforums on a monthly basis to hear students concerns and let them know what I amdoing and form a closer connection with The DIGEST,” Hughes said,”My overall goal for my administration is tobring the student body to a higher level of greatness we need to mobilize thestudent body unite them, not polarize them.”
