Contrary to whatsome people on campus may think, the tan-bricked building adjacent to theinfirmary is not abandoned and desolate.
In fact, it isjust the opposite.
The buildingserves as the Southern University Counseling Center, a place where students cango if they need someone to talk to.
Unfortunately, not many students utilize this resource due to lack of information on theservices the counseling center provides.
It comes down tohow a student distinguishes mental health.
”Students can come in to talk aboutrelationships, discuss any roommate conflicts they might have, or they can evencome in to talk about how to negotiate with a professor,” said ValaRay Irvin, director of the center.
The counselingcenter offers professional individual counseling, group counseling and familycounseling.
“We even offercounseling for couples if at least one of them is a counseling center client,”Irvin said.
In addition, thecounseling center provides various workshops and seminars to classes andorganizations on campus.
“We also docrisis and emergencies,” Irvin said “We have a direct link from our office tothe Baton Rouge Crisis Center.”
Irvin added that a professionalpsychiatrist makes a visit to the university each week to provide betterservice for clients.
The counselingcenter is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the academic year. It is open to both full-time andpart-time students at SU.
