BIRMINGHAM, Ala., – No. 8 seed Mississippi Valley State University women’s basketball team upset top seed Alabama State 57-52 in the quarterfinals of the 2004 Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament in Fair Park Arena.
“Our pressure defense really hurt them down the stretch,” said Mississippi Valley head coach Nathaniel Kilbert. “Most of the time I was sitting on the sideline hollering and screaming, our kids did it. All credit goes to our kids.”
The Devillettes’ pressure defense forced 21 Lady Hornets (20-8) turnovers.
MVSU (7-20) was down 17-30 at the half shooting only six-of-31 of their shots. It was not until 8:29 left in regulation when Mississippi Valley was down 46-36 that they made their comeback.
With the aid of senior guard Natasha Booth adding six of her 13 points during a four minute run, Mississippi Valley tied the score 46-46 with 4:28 left on the clock.
The Devillettes next game is Friday against Grambling State University in the semifinals at 8 p.m. at the Fair Park Arena.
