BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference basketball tournament will change its recent format and expand to eight teams playing at one site.
The 2004 men and women’s tournaments will return to Birmingham, Ala. and Fair Park Arena, but will feature the eight qualifying teams, from the 10 team conference, playing at the same site over a four day period, March 10-13, 2004.
In recent years, the tournament utilized campus satellite sites for all quarter-final games with the winners advancing to the central site for a two-day event, beginning with the semi-final games.
This year’s SWAC tournament will tip off on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 with four women’s games beginning at 11 a.m. and culminating with a 7 p.m. game. On Thursday, the women’s will take the day off while the men’s segment of tournament action begins with the same four-game format.
Friday, March 12, 2004 will feature semi-final games with the women playing at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Men’s semifinal games will tip-off at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Championship games for women and men will be played on Saturday, March 13, 2004. Times will be announced at a later date.
Auxiliary Tournament week events are being planned to make the SWAC tournament a fan-friendly affair.
