For the third straight year, Southern University has ranked among Black Enterprise Magazine’s top 50 colleges and universities for African-American students.
“We are absolutely delighted to be among the top 50 best schools for African-American collegians,” said Chancellor Edward Jackson. “It certainly speaks volumes to the quality education and nurturing environment we provide to our students.”
The only Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) school to make the list, SU ranked No. 37, edging No. 38, John Hopkins; No. 39, Vasser College; No. 40, Yale University; No. 44 Tennessee State University; No. 45, Ohio State University; and No. 49, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Morehouse College attained the No. 1 spot, followed by No. 2, Hampton University, and No. 3, Spelman College.
Only three public black universities, No. 6, Florida A&M University; No. 19, North Carolina A&T State University; and No. 35, Morgan State University; ranked higher than SU.
According to the list, Southern University’s tuition is the seventh lowest of the 50 institution named and the fifth lowest among the historically black colleges listed. The out-of-state tuition at SU is the second lowest.
“It makes me feel good to be a student at S.U., even though improvements need to be made,” said Theryl Jones, an electronics major from Kenner.
The magazine based its ranking on a survey of 1,855 African American professionals in higher learning.
