On December 28 the Southern University Intramural Men’s football team won the National Flag Football Championship in New Orleans.
Southern won 27-20 and sent Baylor University running with their tail between their legs. Senior class quarterback LaVanta Davis opened with a touchdown pass to junior Dehaven Dursolet. Freshman Antonio Overstreet caught a 59-yard pass to the Baylor one. SU ran and scored 75 yards to score on a Jackson reception and the game ended with Southern in the lead.
SU flag football teams have participated in the 24th annual ACIC National Championship since 1993.
“This is the first time the men have gone this far and won a championship. Our team got awards for the Most Valuable Player and many other ones,” said Director of Intramural Sports Melvin Robinson.
Williams received the Most Valuable Player Award for being a dedicated player.
“I took a leadership role and we stuck together as a team and kept the drive going,” said Levanta Williams, a senior physical education major from New Orleans.
Although the women did not win the national championship, three women received awards for All-American player including senior Tiesha Wilson, senior Alisia Cardoza and junior Quanda Williams. Wilson also received MVP accolades.
“We did well and came in third place. I’m disappointed that we did not win the championships, but lost by just one touchdown,” said Cardoza, a physical education major from New Orleans.
Freshmen players, Overstreet and Brandon McCray won outstanding players awards and John Foremen won defensive player.
“Anytime you win the championship you are doing your best. I’m proud of them because these guys know how to play the game,” said Tyrone Tanner, assistant director of intramural sports.
