Leadership runs through the veins of senior Avery Wilson.
From past Student Government Association president to the 2002-2003 president of the National Black Student Government Association, his achievements have not gone unnoticed.
The National Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP) has selected Wilson as the 2003 recipient of the Outstanding Student Leader Award.
“Being nominated from a university which has so many outstanding leaders is an achievement within itself, ” said Wilson, a political science major and native of Baton Rouge.
The award is presented each year by NASAP to recognize students with demonstrated efforts in promoting independence and effectiveness in leadership. Wilson competed with students from all other HBCUs.
Nominated by Edna Hickman, assistant to the vice chancellor for student affairs and immediate past financial secretary for NASAP, she described Wilson as an “accomplished student leader.”
“What has impressed me most about Avery is that he is able to balance his time well between academics and involvement in various civic and social activities.
Wilson’s achievements include SU Board of Supervisors Student Member, Who’s Who Among American Collegiate Students, and SU Honor’s College Dean’s List.
Aside from scholastic achievements, Wilson is very active in the university as well as the Baton Rouge community. He is artistic director of the “Look” Dancers and mentors and volunteers with the Louisiana Leadership Institute.
“I believe leadership is a blessing from God and finessed through experience,” said Wilson.
Wilson will receive the award at NASAP’s 49th Annual Meeting on February 8 in Durham, NC.
