On January 26 and 27, the Southern University bowling team took on the Grambling State University Lady Tigers.
“We went into the tournament undefeated and I felt very confident about the team, however if anyone was going to beat us it would be Grambling,” said head coach Karen Couvillion.
“Grambling was the only team that we had not met and they came out playing hard, so I told my girls not to let up and play strong.”
The Lady Jaguars held back no punches outscoring the Lady Tigers Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, Southern beat Grambling 4666 pinfalls to 4343. The Jaguars continued their wining streak on Sunday defeating Grambling 4764 pinfalls to 4348.
The Lady Jaguars are considered to be the best in the Southwestern Athletic conference still being undefeated as the SWAC Bowling championship arrives on February 15 and16.
“This week was my second time bowling and I was more relaxed,” said freshman Crystal Alexander. “The reason we did so well is because we were having fun.”
The Jaguars’ freshman really shined against Grambling. Alexander was the team’s most valuable player for Saturday with the high game of the series averaging 207 pinfalls per game.
Southern finished the first day of the tournament losing the final match of the day in the Baker game 848 to 745 pins but this did not prevent them from winning.
The tournament continued Sunday with the freshmen still holding down the fort for the team. Freshman Erin Williams started the tournament off with the highest score in singles bowling a 232 game. Helping her team to defeat Grambling in the singles 2689 pins to 2453 pins. Williams took high game in doubles as well finishing the day as team MVP. Southern ended the tournament defeating Grambling in baker making the entire day a complete lost for Grambling.
Southern will face Texas Southern University February 1, in Houston.
