Ever since the existence of historical black colleges and universities, the marching band has been respected and admired by all.
With the powerful sounds of soulful oldies and popular R&B hits, the often imitated but never duplicated–Southern University “Human Jukebox”, have electrified audiences and left fans satisfied since the beginning.
The 170-member band, orchestrated by Dr. Isaac Greggs since1948, once voted number one in the nation by USA Today and Best Collegiate Marching Band by Sportsview Magazine has proved victorious in yet another band competition.
Sponsored by Motown Records, a band competition for HBCU bands which began in September, early in the season for marching bands and ended in December. More than 20 black colleges showcased their ability in the competition, reported by Motown Project Manager Tatia Adams explained on the Tavis Smiley Show.
Each was required to play an original piece titled “Star”, which is new song by Motown Recording by popular girl group 702. Based on videotapes of the performances, Executives at Motown judged the performances. They judged the band on creativity, musical arrangement, and most importantly sound.
Many bands competed in the competition only a few made it to the final round. The bands that succeeded in the competition were, Southern, Florida A&M and Norfolk State Universities.
But there could only be one winner. Once again the best band from Jaguarland, took home the award.
Southern University was awarded the top prize of $10,000 cash.
“I’m so glad I won it, because I had no money at the time. I tell you God is good all the time. I now have the money to buy my seniors jackets and trophies,” said Greggs.
“There is no competition for my band, we are the best. I knew we would win because we always do,” said Greggs.
Recently the band traveled to Mobile, AL to perform Saturday, January 18th at the Senior Bowl. Their talent was also showcased locally on WBRZ and nation -wide on ESPN, last week.
“Our job is to make fans happy. So far I think they are very pleased,” said Greggs.
