Making your dorm room feel like home

Once the dust has settled and the move in madness has ceased, students both old and new have transformed their dorm rooms into peaceful havens in which they call home.
From pictures of family and friends to favorite stuffed animals and bed dressings, there are several ways to create a home away from home.
“I put pictures and momentos around my room to make it feel more warm,” said Anthony McGrew, a freshman architecture major from Alexandria.
Most students pack photos of their kin and those close to them, but greeting cards and posters can also do the trick. Stuffed animals are another popular item. They can bring comfort to a stressed student and invoke a sense of serenity, much like that of home.
Although most residential halls require undergrads to have roommates or in some cases suitemates, some students have the luxury of having a room to themselves.
“I stay by myself so I can have everything where I want it to be,” said Joshua Palmer, a sophomore mass communications major from New Orleans. “Having things exactly the way I want them to be is what makes it like home to me.”
There is one item in particular that many students included in their luggage—the Holy Bible.
“There are a lot of things such as pictures and keepsakes that can be brought from home, but my bible is what reminds me of home,” said Kenyatta Williams, a junior electrical engineering major from Vicksburg, Miss.
Those who have deep religious roots utilize their bible in times of hardship and difficulty and it reminds them of their family.
“I prayed to bless my room when I moved in,” said McGrew.
Whatever it takes to make your dorm room cozy, make sure you do it to suit your needs, because it is very important to be comfortable where you are.
