The Martin Luther King Catholic Student Center is not only a place that focuses on religion but it is also a facility to study, counsel and socialize.
The center provides a quiet place for all students, not just those who are Catholic, to come in at their leisure between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. for private study and counseling services.
“Being a religious center, we focus on religion but religion should be something that goes out and touches the other areas of a person’s life,” said Father Jack Vessels, chaplain of the Catholic Center.
Its motto, “It’s a Home away from Home,” holds true because the center hosts several social events such as parties, dances and movies and pizza on Sunday nights.
“We try to choose movies that are entertaining but, at the same time, interesting enough to discuss so that we can learn a little bit,” Vessels said.
Religious ceremonies take place as well. Mass is held on Sundays at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. and prayer and bible study five days a week at noon.
During home football games, the Catholic Center provides a place for fans and students’ families from out of town to participate in Mass at 4 p.m.
“Students who come here for whatever reason want to try to find a small community of friends or make friends in a wholesome environment. The center can provide that for them,” Vessels said.
