Freshman Ashley Boutee, striker for the Southern University Lady Jaguars soccer team, made history this week when she was named the first-ever women’s soccer player of the week for the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Boutee scored six goals in Southern’s first collegiate win against the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University. She has scored a total of eight goals in three games.
“She is a hard worker and a team player. She does what she needs to do for the team and her teammates respect her. She is a great player,” said SU soccer head coach Rohan Naraine. “In soccer, you just can’t depend on one person, but she does her job and she is a phenomenal player who is only going to get better. This is great for our team because she has made history.”
The season is now in full swing since September 4, when the Lady Panthers of Prairie View A&M defeated Texas Southern 10-1 in the inaugural match of SWAC women’s soccer.
Another SWAC women’s soccer milestone was made by Alabama A&M sophomore Priscilla Mensah. She was the SWAC’s first goalie of the week. Mensah has a 0.78 goals against average with a .882 save percentage (2-15)
Texas Southern’s Jennifer Tavera scored the first goal in SWAC women’s soccer history and the first Southern player to score a goal was Boutee in their win over Texas Southern.
The Lady Jags will go on to face Alcorn State on September 21 in Lorman, Miss. at 3 p.m.
