Students engaging in study sessions, checking email, and writing research papers are just a few of the sights one might find at Southern University’s John B. Cade Library.
“The number one purpose of the library is to service the students,” said Emma Bradford Perry, Dean of Libraries.
The four-story library is not only a place to check out books.
The $11 million dollar multipurpose facility has 154,240 square feet of space equipped with many tools for learning and enrichment. It also contains more than one million books.
In the lobby of the library, students and faculty members are greeted to an Internet cafe.Students can also take advantage of the 50 computers located on the second floor.
The video center has a video collection of over 1,000 videos and several private-viewing stations. Videos can be checked out at the circulation desk on the first floor.
Classrooms are available for presentations, meetings, conferences and workshops on the second floor of the library. Each has a seating capacity of 100.The training center, also located on the second floor, is designed for product testing demonstrations, interactive workshops and training on Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
The library is also equipped with an Electronic Assistive Technology Workstation for faculty, staff and students with disabilities.
Perry said she encourages students to come to the library on campus before going to the library at Louisiana State University. “I have an open door policy, whenever the students need me I will take time to help them,” said Perry. With so much studying being done, students can also relax and enjoy a cold drink in the snack lounge on the first floor.
Regular library hours are Monday-Thursday 7:30 a.m. to midnight, Friday 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Saturday 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m., and Sunday 2:00 p.m.- midnight.
