On Wednesday, September 17, the Alpha Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta hosted the Oh Drama; an event based on the television talk show, Oh Drama staring Kym Whitley, Vanessa Bell Calloway, and Julissa Marquez.
Hosts, Brandy Ruffin, Tamara White, and Nina Burchett’s purpose was to focus on issues that young women may face on a daily bases. The theme Unleashed made for a carefree, no holds barred conversation.
Issues such as “What would you do if you found out that you are dating a married man?” and “What is the difference between a boyfriend, an “old man” and a boo” among several others, were discussed.
“We discussed self-esteem issues and problems in relationships like different religions, cheating circumstances and why we have the biggest problem with the female rather than our boyfriends. Just to get insight and feedback from them,” said Ruffin, a senior sociology and criminal justice major from Baton Rouge.
The question-answer style discussion allowed the audience to express their views openly, confidently and as realistically as possible. It also provided an avenue for them to comfortably say what their feelings and reservations are minus the scrutiny and criticism.
“It was meant for black women to come together and talk and vent without thinking that people are looking at you and trying to judge you because of what you say,” said Burchett, a senior computer science major from Chicago.
The Oh Drama program seemed very beneficial and entertaining to those in attendance.
“It gave them a chance to get to know the Alpha Tau Chapter a little better and let them know that we go through the same issues that they go through, so we can learn how they deal with them” said White, a junior nursing psychology major from New Orleans.
