More than a dozen people were injured Monday afternoon when a bus crashed into a concrete and steel utility pole.
Passengers said the driver appeared to have fainted just before the wreck.
One passenger was seriously injured after being thrown out of the front window of the bus when he tried to grab the steering wheel.
Driver Arthur Young was found lying on the access steps when emergency crews arrived.
He and 16 other passengers were taken to six local hospitals, Fire Department spokesman Brian Crawford said.
Young was listed in serious to critical condition Monday afternoon and Kevin Merritt, the man who grabbed the steering wheel, was listed in serious condition.
The other passengers suffered minor to moderate injuries, Crawford said.
The bus was on its way to the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center.
