Colleges and departments around Southern University are offering free tutorial services to help students stay on the path of academic success.
The foreign language lab, located in T.T. Allain, is available for all levels and is open
Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.
The lab consists of computers with software, cassette tapes, and videos that can be checked out for personal use.
“The lab serves as a tool to support what students do in class and will help you master the material,” said Linda Lassiter, chairperson of the Department of Foreign Languages.
The accounting department will offer student tutorial sessions. The specific hours are not set, but will be posted on bulletin boards in T.T. Alain and will be announced in all accounting classes.
According to C.W. Elliot, director of the School of Accounting, accounting majors must attend mandatory tutorial sessions.
“If you are having a problem you should worry about it on a day to day basis,” Elliot said. “Many students complain but when you make it available they don’t use it.”
The history department has developed a reading club.
“Many students are not reading independently, and we are encouraging them to read and broaden their education,” said Douglas Jackson, a professor in the history department.
The official book club will take off in late September and the department is inviting students to suggest titles.
The mathematics department offers a lab that allows students to access math lessons and practice examinations on computers. The math lab is available in T.T. Allain Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
“Many students enjoy the lab, and feel it has strengthened their math skills,” said Jessie Foster, math lab coordinator.
The lab is open for volunteers to help assist with their program, if you are interested contact Foster at 771-4100.
