BATON ROUGE–U.S. Army Major General Russel Honoré, Commander of the Standing Joint Force Headquarters for Homeland Security (U.S. Northern Command), will deliver the keynote address at Southern University’s summer commencement exercises Friday, August 1 at 10:30 a.m. in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
Students will be awarded graduate and undergraduate degrees.
A 1971 graduate of Southern University, Honoré plans and coordinates land and maritime military operations and provides military assistance to civilian authorities in order to protect and defend the United States.
After receiving a bachelor of science degree in vocational agriculture from Southern University, Honoré was commissioned as a second lieutenant of infantry and earned a master of arts degree from Troy State University while on active duty.
He has held numerous command and staff positions including, Commanding General, 2nd Infantry Division, Korea; Vice Director for Operations, J-3, The Joint Staff, Washington, D.C.; and Deputy Commanding General/Assistant Commandant, U.S. Army Infantry Center and School, Fort Benning, Georgia.
Among Major General Honoré’s personal awards and decorations are the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Expert Infantry Badge, the Parachutist Badge, and the Joint Staff Identification Badge.
University personnel will be on hand to assist individuals with special needs.
