7th Annual DoE EPSCoR & LS-LAMP Student Research Conference
7th Annual DoE EPSCoR & LS-LAMP Student Research Conference will be held November 23 at the Sheraton Hotel in New Orleans. An important component of the conference is the student oral and poster scientific competitions. These competitions will display the research and presentation skills of minority, undergraduate scholars in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Top presenters will receive awards. LS-Lamp is current accepting abstracts for student oral and poster presentations. Registration is avaible at www.ls-lamp.org. SOCIAL & BEHAVIORIAL SCIENCES UNDERGRADUTE RESEARCH CONFERENCE
The 5th Annual Social & Behavioral Sciences Undergraduate Research Conference will be held Friday, November 7 in the Cotillion Ballroom in Smith-Brown Memorial Union from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The purpose of the conference is to showcase oral presentations of empirical and theoretical research papers submitted by students in the social and behavioral sciences. This event is being sponsored by the Departments of Social Work and Sociology in collaboration with the Departments of Criminal Justice, Economics, History, Political Science, Rehabilitation and Disability Studies, Speech Pathology and Sociology. A PHI A accepting Miss Black and Gold Applications
The Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is currently accepting applications for their annual Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant. All interested young ladies please see any member of the Beta Sigma Chapter. As always, the winner of the pageant will advance to District competition and possibly Regionally. In addition, she will be awarded a sizable monetary stipend.
Mass Schedule Change
Mass at the Martin Luther King Catholic Student Center will be held at 11:30 a.m. instead of 11 a.m. Sunday, October 26. Mass will also still be held at 8 p.m. every Sunday. Saturday, October 25, there will be a pre-game mass at 4 p.m. Saturday, November 8, the Catholic Center will celebrate “The Mass of the Holy Spirit” led by Bishop Muench at noon. All students, faculty, staff and visitors are invited.
Writing Proficiency Retake Examination
The Writing Proficiency Retake Examination will be given on Thursday, November 6. Sign in begins at 3:15 p.m. To ensure that the test begins on time, there will be absolutely no admittance after 3:45 p.m. Students are to report as follows: A-Z – Stewart Hall Auditorium. Tutoring is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Harris Hall Room 2024. HBCU-UP SMART PROGRAM
The HBCU-UP SMART Program is accepting applications from undergraduate students majoring in targeted science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) disciplines that desire to participate in faculty mentored research experiences during Spring 2004. Targeted disciplines include: Agricultural Sciences (Animal Science; Plant and Soil Sciences; Urban Forestry), Architecture, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science,

Admission Applications for the School of Nursing
The School of Nursing will be accepting for admission for the Spring 2004 semester. The deadline for submitting applications is November 1. All students must meet the criteria: (1) Have a grade point average of 2.6 or above (2) Submission of ACT/SAT scores (3) Completion of all courses listed in the first three semesters of the nursing curriculum plan with a minimum grade of “C.” For more information call 771-3266.
Early Registration for Spring 2004
Be advised that Early Registration for the Spring 2004 semester will be held from November 3 to November 19. The following is the breakdown according to priority: November 3-4: Law School and Graduate School, November 5-7: 60 earned hours and above (Juniors and Seniors), November 8-10: 59 earned hours and below (Sophomore and Freshman) and November 11-19: Everyone. Note: November 11-19 students with problems may be seen in the Enrollment Office located in T.H. Harris hall. Be advised that a $30 failure to pre-register fee will be billed to those continuing students who fail to participate in early-registration.

Tennis Clinic
The Southern University Women’s Tennis team will be hosting a fundraising tennis clinic Friday, October 24 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the campus tennis courts. Participants can also challenge any member of the team. The cost of the clinic is $4.00. If a participant wins a set, money will be returned.
Bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase at WBR Museum
Please join the West Baton Rouge Historical Association in welcoming C.E. Richard on Thursday, November 6 at 7 p.m. at the West Baton Rouge Museum located at 845 North Jefferson Avenue in Port Allen. Richard is a writer and filmmaker specializing in the rich history and culture of Louisiana.
