In less than a week, Southern will begin festivities to celebrate the 2003 Homecoming season.
The theme for Homecoming this year is, “A Better Me, A Better You, A Better SU,” and the slogan is “J.A.G.S. (Just Another Great Slogan) Reloaded.”
“Now that I am an official Alumni, the thought of Homecoming is even more exciting,” said Alisha Alexander, a 2002 Business Management graduate. “Homecoming is a time to celebrate and enjoy this great institution.”
There are various activities scheduled for the week of October 6 through October 11. However, Friday, September 26 was the official opening day for the Homecoming activities.
In the Royal Cotillion Ballroom of the Smith-Brown Memorial Union, the Miss Southern University Coronation was held for Kyana D. Stewart.
The Ecumenical service to commence the week will also be held on October 6, at 11 a.m. in the Royal Cotillion Ballroom. Spirit Day is Monday, October 6. All students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to wear blue and gold.
All affairs will be held at the F.G. Clark Activity Center. On Tuesday, October 7 at 7 p.m., the talent show will be held.
The winner of the showcase will have an opportunity to perform at Thursday night’s concert.
Wednesday’s event includes a comedy show at 7:30 p.m. Scheduled headlines include Freeze Luv, Nord, and D.C. Curry.
Convocation will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 9. The guest speaker will be Dr. Calvin Lewis, the director of Business Development Systems, Services and Designs, Incorporated.
The pep rally will be held at noon, and the concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Admission for the concert is $5 for students with an ID and $20 for other college students. Scheduled acts include YoungBloodz, Soulja Slim, TI, Marcus Houston and Tyrese.
On Friday, October 10 at 7 p.m., the Alumni Round Up will take place in the Royal Cotillion Ballroom. Admission is $15.
“It is nothing like coming home to family,” said Dione Davenport, a 2001 Agricultural Business graduate.
At 7:30 p.m., the Greek Show will be held at the F.G. Clark Activity Center. Admission is $7.
Winners of this event will go on to perform at the Bayou Classic Greek Show in New Orleans in November.
On Saturday, October 11, the day begins at 8 a.m. with the Southern University Homecoming Parade in Scotlandville.
Various acts are registered to participate including campus organizations, bands, and local businesses and youth groups.
Miss Southern and her court will enter A.W. Mumford Stadium at 5:45 p.m. to start the pre-game show.
To end the week of festivities, the Homecoming football game will take place at the A.W. Mumford Stadium. The Jaguars will take on Alabama A & M at 6:30 p.m.
“Homecoming is a time to make people feel appreciated and for Alumni to come back to celebrate with the institution that provided their education,” said Wilbert Jones, assistant director of purchasing, who is also the Homecoming Steering Committee Chairperson.
