After writing the first part of this article one thing became clear to me. It wasn’t that I was homophobic, a bigot or anything of the likes, but there is serious delusion when it comes to the stage of morals in modern society.
Part one of this article evoked the most interesting feedback, some good and an overwhelming number of negatively charged responses. Some felt I was bigot who hated people with alternative lifestyles, some even expressed that I was ignorant and had no right to determine what was taboo in society and what was not. The truth of the matter is that I merely called to public attention the moral decline in modern society.
So who is able to deem what is taboo, whether it is a pasted taboo or one living and thriving in society today? The answer is simple “the masses.” The perception of the masses form truth. Surly no one would disagree today if I were to say “the sky is blue,” or “the human body is mostly composed of water.” The reason why is because the masses believe this to be truth.
On the matter of the moral decline in society, the masses deem truth and look at certain things as taboo.
Many things that could have signified moral decline in this instance, I choose to use open homosexuality as an example of decreased morality in society. True, I could have used suicide bombings or the prevalence of hand guns and the people that use them, I simply chose not to.
However, because I chose to use open homosexuality as the example of the decline of morals in society I have evoked interest and emotions that would have otherwise been silenced in many minds. By stating what the masses believe many may be enlighten with the truth.
On the other hand those that do not share the beliefs of the majority raised concerns about the taboos and go as far as stating homosexuality as a factor of genetics and even questioning whether or not it is moral in the eyes of the church.
In the church we are taught and I strongly believe- God is a God of love. Homosexuals, despite their immoral behavior, are loved by God. This is so because God’s love is equal for all people. As we see in the Gospels, Jesus demonstrated His love for sinners time and time again.
However, God is also a God of holiness, and the Bible is clear in its condemnation of sodomy. In Leviticus 18:22 and Romans 1: 26,27 this is evident.
As stated in part one of this article I do believe that homosexuality is a personal choice and has little to do with genetics.
Northwestern University’s J.M. Bailey claimed that he found clear evidence against genetic transmission. In a study, published in the March 2000 issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, where only three pairs of identical male twins were both homosexuals out of 27 male identical twin pairs where at least one of the pair was homosexual. Bailey found similar results for lesbians.
Bailey’s team also asked non-concordant identical twins (one was homosexual, one not) about their early family environment, and found that the same family environment was experienced or perceived by the twins in quite different ways. These differences led later to homosexuality in one twin, but not in the other. If homosexuality is genetic then homosexuality in one twin should mirror in the other twin.
There have been numerous studies that have been done to prove that homosexuality is genetic, however there have also been several studies done and replicated to prove otherwise. Here is the question that I pose to those disagreeing with the belief of the masses.
Is a girl genetically compelled to become pregnant at 15?
Her genes might give her physical characteristics that make her attractive to boys – but whether she gets pregnant will depend greatly on whether her community is Amish or urban, conservative or liberal, whether they use contraceptives, and whether the parents are away for the evening.
So the influence of the genes is very indirect. Some influence from the environment (in this case a boy) is essential! The effects of genes on behaviors are very indirect because genes make proteins, not preferences.
Another, quite obvious, example of what is being said is that of alcoholism. It has been demonstrated that there may be a genetic predisposition towards the condition.
If a person does not drink alcohol, however, he will not possibly become an alcoholic.
Thus it is the behavior one assumes during one’s life that determines the acquisition of a certain genetic predisposition, not the gene itself.
Choice or nature?!
Think about it.
So again I say that this wasn’t an attack on those with alternative lifestyle, but rather an illustration exemplifying the great delusion that plagues our society.
Not to say that open homosexuality is the only indicator of this decline but merely a part of a whole issue.
There is a great moral decline in society today and I believe that if to alleviate these issues there are past taboos that should stay that way.
