Dr. Peter Dawson, director of Student Health Services will serve as the Grand Marshal of Southern University’s 2003 Homecoming Parade
Dawson will lead the parade that starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, October 11 in the Scotlandville community.
Dawson, a native of Plaquemine, graduated from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn.
“I think that this is a great honor,” Dawson said. “I never expected this; so, I was very surprised when I received the phone call.”
Not only does Dawson treat students, he also serves as an ambassador for the university.
In July, he and 15 other representatives from SU attended an International Conference on Public Policy Development and Management in South Africa.
Dawson has been working with the health center for 35 years and the director for the past five years. He also serves as the primary physician for the football team.
“I like my job. I think it’s an advantage being associated with young people, it keeps you young,” Dawson said. ” I try to treat these students as if they were my own.”
In Dawson’s spare time, he likes to study astronomy and grows roses and vegetables. He has over100 different plants in his yard.
The parade will begin at Rosenwald Road and Elm Grove Garden Drive. It will travel down Elm Grove Garden, turn right on Fairchild Street, then left on Jones Street, then making a right turn on to Harding Boulevard.
Next the parade will proceed down Harding Boulevard to Scenic Highway, making a right turn off of Scenic onto Scotland Avenue (Highway 19) and ending at Scotlandville Magnet High School.
