BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ Quincy Richard threw a career-high five touchdowns as Southern took a 55-25 victory over Alabama A&M on Saturday night.
Richard overcame three interceptions to finish 25-of-40 for 312 yards as the Jaguars (6-0, 4-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) finished with 470 yards of total offense.
Alabama A&M (4-3, 2-2) was held to 153 yards, 105 in the air.
A&M’s Jeremiah Bond was held to a season-low 22 rushing yards on 14 carries and a touchdown.
The Jaguars struck for three touchdowns during a five-minute span in the second quarter to take a 32-5 halftime lead.
Richard started the scoring blitz with an 11-yard touchdown toss to Chris Davis.
Southern recovered an Alabama A&M fumble on the ensuing kickoff, and Richard capitalized three plays later with a 33-yard scoring strike to Drayton Bridges.
A failed fake punt attempt on the Bulldogs next possession set up the Jaguars’ next score, a 4-yard run by Leon Miller.
Alabama A&M’s only first-half points came on a Reggie Johnson return on a blocked extra point attempt for two points and Rashad Cylar’s 48-yard field goal.
The Bulldogs managed to climb back into the game briefly in the third quarter when Henry Robinson intercepted a Richard pass on Southern’s 3-yard line and ran it in for a score. Then Bond’s touchdown closed the deficit to 34-19.
But on A&M’s next possession, Southern’s Erin Damond returned an interception 46 yards for a score.
