Property along Scenic Highway and Harding Boulevard has been cleared to make way for a $25 million housing project for the Southern University community.
“The Palisades at Jaguar City” will feature four bedroom/four bath, one bedroom/one bath and two bed/two bath units accommodating 576 students.
The project, funded solely by Educational Development Company of America, will also include a business park, to attract more consumers and businesses to the area. “This facility is designed to stimulate economic growth in the Scotlandville community,” said SU Chancellor Edward Jackson. “This is Southern University’s contribution to the community.”
Built primarily for graduate students, law students, married students and some faculty, the gated community will also have a pool and clubhouse complete with a multimedia room, lounge area, bar and other amenities.
Educational Development Company of America is a Tallahassee, Fla.-based company that specializes in innovative housing solutions for historically black colleges and universities. The company uses money from private investors and foundations to provide this service.
It has created university communities surrounding the campuses of Florida A&M University and Texas Southern University.
“This facility is not designed to replace on-campus housing,” Jackson said. The apartments are projected to open August 2004.
