NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Although Louisiana’s West Nile tally rose by nine cases this week, only three were in Caddo or Bossier parishes, which have been hit worst by the virus this year.
Ascension and Rapides parishes reported their first human cases this year.
The rest were in Jefferson, Natchitoches, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes.
This year’s West Nile outbreak remains far smaller than last year’s.
The state now has 80 cases of West Nile meningitis or encephalitis, and 13 of milder West Nile fever.
That compares to 310 cases – 189 of them meningitis or encephalitis – and 16 deaths as of Oct. 18, 2002.
