The Southern University Homecoming Parade Committee is soliciting volunteers to perform as cartoon characters and clowns for the homecoming parade Saturday, October 11. Costumes, wigs, face make-up and other supplies are provided. The deadline to apply is Monday, October 6 at noon. The MLK Catholic Student Center is planning fall workshops and panel discussion on topics of interest and concern to students such as addiction, studying, prayer, community service, dating, leisure, spirituality,discerning a career, counseling, friendship, justice and faith, interreligious dialogue, cultural differences, and family relations.

GOSPEL CHOIR
Come and join the Southern University Interdenominational Gospel Choir. Bible Study and rehearsals are Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. taught by Rev. Rodney Wooten at the Wesley Foundation located next to the Villa Apartments across from the SU football practice field. Important upcoming events this fall include a live CD recording, halftime gospel show with the SU band, fall concert with SWAC schools, outreach ministry and 2003 National Love Conference. Refreshments will be served weekly.
SU BEAUTY SALON NOW OPEN
The SU Beauty Salon is now open in the Smith Brown Memorial Union across from the computer lab. Stylist Mark Kaufman along with two other stylists specializes in relaxers, cuts, roller wraps and eyebrow arches. $30 relaxers special until October 10. A braid technician will be on site. ON ACADEMIC SUCCESS
The Center for Student Success presents its Fall 2003 Seminar Series on Academic Success. The series is designed to offer students a low pain, great gain experience. In addition to receiving free valuable information on selected topics, students will have the opportunity to ask questions that address their individual concerns about the subject. Conference
7th Annual DoE EPSCoR & LS-LAMP Student Research Conference will be held November 23 at the Sheraton Hotel in New Orleans. An important component of the conference is the student oral and poster scientific competitions. These competitions will display the research and presentation skills of minority, undergraduate scholars in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Top presenters will receive awards. LS-Lamp is current accepting abstracts for student oral and poster presentations. Registration is avaible at www.ls-lamp.org. JSU vs. SU Football Game Bus Trip
The Southern University sophomore class is providnig two spectator buses that will be travelling to Jackson, Mississippi to witness the SU Jaguars take on the Jackson State Tigers October 18. Campus Decorations
Southern University Departments are encouraged to show their homecoming spirit by participating in Homecoming Campus Decorations. The homecoming theme is: “A better Me, A Better You, A Better S.U.” and the slogan is “J.A.G.S. RELOADED.” This year the committee would like to see more outdoor decorations displayed. Please notify the committee whether or not you will have indoor/outdoor decorations or both. Displays should be up starting October 9. SATURDAY ACADEMY
TUTORING PROGRAM
“Saturday Academy,” a free tutoring program authored by Representative Sharon Weston Broome and administered by Urban Restoration Enhancement Corporation, is in need of volunteers for the 2003-2004 school year. Tutoring begins October 11 will run through April 24, 2004 at Port Allen Middle School, Brookstown Baptist Church and Glen Oaks Baptist Church. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on designated Saturdays. Volunteers will be responsible for assisting teachers in classrooms, one-on-one tutoring sessions when needed child as supervision on field trips and coordinating special assignments such as arts and crafts and recreational games. Volunteers must be 18 year of age, enthusiastic, committed to youth, able to follow specific directions and must have reliable transportation.
